"Paola Woman, 90, Has Gala Birthday Celebration With Family, Friends

When one is 90 years old, has reared a nice family and spent many years in one community there is occasion to be remembered and so it was with Mrs. O. E. Doty of Paola whose 90th birthday was April 22. The celebrating started with a family dinner at the Airport café at noon Sunday followed by open house at the home of her son, Guy and his wife, 407 East Peoria from 2 to 5 that afternoon. Then on Tuesday evening a birthday dinner was served at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Louise J. Doty. ...

Mrs. Doty is a native Kansan and has spent her fourscore and ten years in the Sunflower state. She was born Louise Jane Dorman, April 22, 1873, to George and Laurinda Dorman on the Indian Reservation near Quenemo. The family home was on a farm Mr. Dorman purchased when the Indians were moved to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Thirteen children were born to the family - seven boys, and six girls. Only Mrs. Doty and two of her brothers are living, Charles Dorman of Hot Springs, Ark. and Herbert Dorman, living near Hot Springs. The father died young, before he was 60, but the mother lived to be 95.

Mrs. Doty and her husband, the late Oscar E. Doty, were married March 10, 1895, at Williamsburg. They lived first at Waverly where he operated a livery barn, and later went to Moline and Lyndon for several years. For 30 years after coming to Paola, February 4, 1911, they lived at 1018 East Peoria. Mr. Doty worked for Joe Nolan, who sold registered horses, and he served as chief of police and day marshal many years. He died June 21, 1937.

For the past 17 years Mrs. Doty has lived in an apartment over the Gas Service office. Her daughter, Mrs. McCullough, lives in an adjoining one and keeps a watchful eye over her mother.

As a young girl she learned the art of a seamstress, working with her mother, and in later years she did much of that work for Paola customers. Before her marriage she worked in the office of a probate judge by the name of Doty (no relation) in Lyndon. When she was 79 she had a serious illness and a major surgery and since then has limited her activities to making rugs and taking care of household duties, cooking, laundry, cleaning and so forth. The past winter she has made several crocheted rugs using a hook her father made for her out of hickory when she was 18.

Mrs. Doty has one daughter, Edna, (Mrs. McCullough) and the two sons, Fern, who is city clerk at Independence, Mo., and Guy, who retired last October after 30 years with Phillips. Another son, Paul, died February 28, 1959. Also she has eight grandchildren. ..."
