Marie T. (Thomas) Gaumond, formerly of South Branch Parkway, Springfield died Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Westfield Gardens Nursing and Rehabilitation. Marie, a daughter of the late Edgar J. and Teresa (Creegan) Thomas was born in Worcester, MA on August 10, 1919. Raised in Worcester she graduated from Worcester Schools and attended Worcester State College and the Sophia Jesuit University in Tokyo, Japan. She was employed by the State Department in Washington, DC as an administrative assistant to the Chief of International and Special Programs Branch and as an Administrative Analyst in the Management Branch of UNESCO. For many years she also worked for the City of Springfield School Department as a Teacher’s Aide at Chestnut Junior High School. Marie lived in many places which included Alabama, Texas, Japan, and Washington, DC and in Springfield and was a communicant of Holy Cross Church. She was very active in the Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Peach Basket Festival, the John Boyle O’Reilly Auxiliary, American Legion Post 430 Women’s Auxiliary, Friends of St. Francis, and local politics. Marie was very devoted to her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by them and all who knew her. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Harry J. Gaumond, Jr., a brother, William Thomas, and a sister, Margaret T. Wood. She is survived by a son, Stephen T. Gaumond and his wife Carol of Lafayette, CO: two daughters, Marijo Ulbricht of Princess Anne, MD and Alison G. Colburn and her husband John of Westfield; a brother, Michael J. Thomas of Keene, NH, seven grandchildren; Gwendolyn Martella, Gail Pyle, Heather Mead, Molly St. Peter, Neal Colburn, and Melanie and Richard Ulbricht; eight great grandchildren, Kael, Klara, Sam, Logan, Audrina, Mackenzie, Owen, and Adrie; along with many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours for Marie will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 from 4 to 7 pm at Sampson’s, Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. Her funeral will be Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 8:30 at Sampson’s followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial in Holy Cross Church, 219 Plumtree Road, Springfield. Rites of Committal and Interment are private at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Agawam. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Marie’s memory may be made to the Holyoke Soldier’s Home Patient Recreation Fund, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
