A memorial service will be held today in the Bronx for Arthur D. Brown, an artist who was one of two salesmen at the well-known Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. The Yonkers native died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland, VT. He was 91.
A painter, Mr. Brown studied art for many years at the Grand Central School of Art, the School of Illustrations, the Phoenix School of Design and Columbia University, all in New York City. He taught art in numerous places, including Fort Dix, N.J.; East Williston, Long Island; and the Chaffee Art Center in Rutland, VT, where he also served on the board of trustees.
Mr. Brown exhibited his art work in the Trenton State Museum in New Jersey and the Gimbels Auditorium in Philadelphia and has had numerous one-man shows in New York City, Westchester and Vermont. His paintings are in private collections in Europe, Bermuda and the United States.
Mr. Brown worked at Woodlawn for 39 years until his retirement in 1970
He was born March 26, 1907, in Yonkers to George and Jeannie Gordon Brown. He attended Yonkers public schools, graduating from Saunders Trades and Technical High School
He served in the Army during World War II
He married Helen Martinson, who died in 1961. In 1963, he married Martha Gottwald Iltis.
Mr Brown is survived by his wife; a son, Arthur Brown, Jr. of Pompton Plains, N.J.; two stepdaughters; Carolee Iltis of Wappinger Falls, N.Y., and Virginia Martin of Wilson Point, Conn.; and five grandchildren.
Four sisters, Alice Sammons, Emily Stubing, Esther Anton and
Jean Brown, and a brother, Howard Brown, all died earlier.
