Daughter of John and Mary Ann (Poole) Williams. Bertha immigrated to Chicago in 1887 with husband Owen Rees Davies and children Beatrice Martha and Lewis John. Her brother Lewis Walter Williams and sister Mary Jane (Williams) Curtis Thompson had immigrated to Chicago a few years prior. Her sister Martha married John Thomas Spinks and remained in Wales. John and Martha's son Windsor Spinks married Gwendoline Amy Williams.

Bertha spoke mostly Welsh.
