The services celebrating the life of Edward Arthur (Sandy) Abernethy, III, MD, of Enid will be at 2:00 pm Friday, July 15, 2016. It will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Enid, with Pastor Wade Burleson officiating. A family burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery will precede the service. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Sandy was born November 16, 1945 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Edward A. "Abo" and Mary Ruth Hill Abernethy and passed from this life into eternal glory on July 12, 2016 at his home in Enid surrounded by his family. He grew up in Enid and graduated from Enid High School in 1963 where he played football and baseball and was on the swim team. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma and then OU Medical School. On August 3, 1968 he married Anne Russell Field whom he had dated since high school in the First Baptist Church of Enid. They lived in Edmond and Oklahoma City while he finished Medical School and did five years of internship and residency at the OU Health Sciences Center in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. He also served in the Army National Guard during that time. In looking at places he wanted to use his expertise in surgery, it became clear that coming back to Enid to open his medical practice and raise their growing family was a good choice. He opened his medical practice in Enid in 1976 and gave brilliant and compassionate care to many patients during 30 years. He was involved in numerous community and medical organizations during those years, but his main focus was his patients, his family and his Lord. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He retired in 2006 and assisted other surgeons in the operating room when needed. He especially enjoyed relaxation in his hobby of building and flying Radio Controlled aircraft at the flying field in Enid, doing some traveling and working with Anne in their garden. He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Anne, of the home. Three children and six grandchildren; Amy Petersen and husband, Brandon and their children Max, Jake, and Reed of Columbia, SC; Sarah Mitzel and husband, Jason and their children Anna Grace, Abigail and Audrey of Stafford, VA.; David of Oklahoma City; his father, Edward "Abo' Abernethy of Enid and brothers, Richard Abernethy of Enid and John Abernethy, Enid. He also loved dearly Anne Russell's four siblings and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by grandparents and his mother, Mary Ruth, and infant brother, James. Memorials in his name may be made to a charity of your choice or; Forgotten Ministries of Enid; American Cancer Society/Garfield County Relay for Life; or Hosanna Institute of the Sahel ministry in Niger, Africa.
