Arriving in Vietnam William was assigned to 3rd Platoon of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
While on a patrol the company encountered hostile forces, 5 kilometers north northeast of Dien Ban. William died as a result of a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen from hostile rifle fire.
