An 85-year-old Cumberland woman died in bed of smoke inhalation as a fire, tentative blamed on an overheated wood and coal heater, burned her two-story, wood-frame house yesterday morning, State Police reported.
Clara B. Wright, who lived on Loop Road in the Bowman's Addition section of Cumberland, was lying down in a second-floor bedroom when the fire began.
Police said the victim's daughter, Arlene C. Wright, 54, was downstairs when the fire broke out and attempted to reach her mother but was stopped by the flames.
Mrs. Wright, who was found in her bed, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter was unharmed, police said.
