Orval C. McCarty was born December 12, 1910, a grandchild of the reverend Wm F S McCarty. On July 27, 1912 Orval's parents, Abner and Rachel McCarty, took him to his grandparents' wedding, he was 1 1/2 years old at the time. Later in life Orval would tell people that his grandfather didn't marry his grandmother until after he was born. And that he had attended their wedding. The news that the good reverend didn't marry until so late in life came as a shock to many people. They couldn't believe the reverend had so many children out of wedlock. Orval would lead them on for awhile and then explain that his father's father W F S McCarty and his mother's mother Sarah D. Hargis had married each other. Explaining that they were his grandparents before they married.
