He was 63 Years old, Co. I, 135th, Reg, Illinois, InfHe was born to Joseph Otstott. He enlisted in the 135th IL Vol Inf Co I in the Civil War mustering in at Mattoon, Illinois for 100 days from June to September, 1864. He was a Pvt. doing guard duty near Jefferson City, Missouri guarding the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. On 24 December 1871 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois he married Sarah Clark Hunt daughter of John Grandin Hunt and Marie Louisa VanMeter. Their marriage produced thirteen children. He was a prominent farmer near Athens, Menard County, Illinois and McLeansboro, Hamilton County, Illinois. He died in a farming accident at his McLeansboro farm.
