Services for Helen Been, 89, of Portales, will be 10:30 AM, Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Central Christian Church in Portales, with David McVey officiating. Burial will follow in Lawn Haven Memorial Park Cemetery in Clovis. Pallbearers will be Robert Holder, Terry Jones Jr., Myron LeMier, Joseph LeMier, Steven Hatch and Stephen Teitz. Those desiring to make memorial contributions may send them to the Central Christian Church in Portales to be used in the Juarez Missions.
Mrs. Been was born Oct. 25, 1917, in St. James, Mo., to the home of Minnie and George J. Neidert. She passed away Thursday evening, Nov. 16th, 2006, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales. Mrs. Been lived her early life in Missouri, and married Myron O. "Bill" Been, on Nov. 9, 1938, in Perryville, Mo. They celebrated more than 65 years of marriage before his death in 2004. In Nov. of 1942, she moved to Clovis. For several yeas she was employed as a nurse on the night shift at Clovis Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Clovis and also the Christian Church. Shortly after her husband retired in 1980, they moved to a small farm outside of Portales. She enjoyed canning, as well as crocheting and quilting, and had made numerous quilts along with her friend, Edna Grimes. Mrs. Been was a member of the Central Christian Church in Portales.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Myron (Bill) and Joanna Been, of New Braunfels, Texas; four daughters and sons-in-law, Joann and Bennie Holder, of Clovis, Carroll and Terry Jones, of Hobbs, Sharon and James J. LeMier, of Portales and Barbara and Donald Fisher, of Evans, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Albert, Lawrence, Bray, Melvin and Louis Neidert; two sisters, Ethel, who died as an infant and Lydia Robbs; one great-grandchild; and by her husband, "Bill" who died Aug. 24, 2004.
Services are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
