Obituary in The Shreveport (LA) Times July 19, 2016:

David Allan Hilburn passed over Jordan to join our Heavenly Father on Friday, July 15, 2016 at the age of 53. He bravely fought a brief, but courageous, battle with cancer. On David's final night his friends and family gathered in his ICU room and had the opportunity to witness David in his element as he went around the room and individually told each person of his love for them and shared his special memories of those people for all to hear. David's final hours may have been spent in an ICU room, but it was a room full of love that spilled into the hall as David invited his ICU nurse to share in the celebration and witnessed to her before he left the presence of their love to go into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

David was born on July 9, 1963 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. After graduating from Dulles High School in Sugar Land David obtained his Bachelors degree in Economics in 1985 from Baylor University. David further studied at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he obtained a Masters in Systematic Theology in 1988 and earned his Juris Doctorate from LSU's Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1992.

David had an insatiable thirst for knowledge of and about the world around him and he was constantly applying what he learned to his life. He had a sharp wit, a dry sense of humor, and was a conversationalist who was as happy talking about politics as he was about the intricacies of making a good gumbo. David loved cooking, reading, writing, music and sports. David especially loved Baylor athletics, Astros baseball and high school football. He was equally comfortable listening to A Prairie Home Companion as he was the Grand Ole Opry or enjoying a fine restaurant as he was cooking for a small group of friends.

David's ultimate passion, though, was for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and he spent the last years of his life working for CHARM Prison Ministries using his life experiences and knowledge to serve, witness, and evangelize to those in prison and assisting former inmates transition back into society. His life was truly an example of how you can live in the world but not be of the world.

David was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Wilbern and Adelle Flenniken from Natchitoches, Louisiana and paternal grandparents, Ray and Bessie Hilburn from Bossier City, Louisiana. He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Walker Persons and her husband, John from Natchitoches; his father, Michael Hilburn and his wife Susan from Bossier City, his brother, Jeff Hilburn from Houston, Texas; his aunt, Peggy Moore and her husband Loy, his cousins John Michael Moore, Susan Moore Feibel and his niece and nephews, Courtney Hilburn, Zachary Hilburn and Josh Hilburn.

David's family will receive friends at the Chapel at Houston's First Baptist Church at 7401 Katy Freeway on Tuesday July 19 at 11:30AM. A celebration of life service officiated by David Trickett of CHARM Ministries will follow at 12:30 PM. There will be a reception following. Honoring David as Pallbearers will be Lance Feibel, Ken Gray, Justin Mixon, John Michael Moore, Tom Slagle, Leon Suniga and Honorary Pallbearers, Steven Murray and David Sherman. Graveside services and interment will be held at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Natchitoches, Louisiana on Wednesday, July 20, at 10:00 AM.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in David's memory to CHARM Prison Ministries, P.O. Box 55548, Houston, Texas 77255-5548.

I know God is with me and that He will never leave me nor forsake me. I also know His grace is enough. And with that, I trust Him completely; for it is well with my soul. Love, David
