Matthew Steven Smith, 44 was born on December 23, 1969 to DeVerl Smith and Sandra (Bice) Rice in South Bend, Indiana.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers and a sister. His four nieces and two nephews were like his children and he loved each one dearly. He is also survived by a great-nephew and an uncle Gary Smith.

Matthew was a friend to hundreds, but his high school friends and college buddies remained very dear to him. He was an accomplished salesman and an avid sportsman. He loved Notre Dame sports, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Reds.

His disease, the last fifteen years, limited his ability to live life to the fullest.

Matthew is now resting in the loving arms of his grandparents, Carl and Irene (Helmlinger) Bice and DeVerl and Barbara (Kronewitter) Smith, who preceded him in death.

Viewing will be Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and one hour prior to the funeral services at 12 pm Saturday at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the St Joseph County Humane Society or the Arthritis National Research Foundation.
