John Powell Deason, Jr. was the son of John Powell and Hattie Bernice Moore Deason and the husband of Mary Huffaker Deason.



DEASON WILKESBORO Dr. John Powell Deason, Jr. April 12, 1926 - Sept. 30, 2013

Dr. John Powell Deason, Jr., age 87, of Wilkesboro, NC died September 30, 2013 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2013 in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro with Dr. Keith Franklin and Dr. Steve Rainey officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the Faith Center of the church.

Dr. Deason was born in Parrish, Alabama, April 12, 1926, to John Powell Deason and Berniece Moore Deason. He graduated from Oakman (Alabama) High School at the age of sixteen and joined the US Navy at the age of seventeen; he served two years during World War II on LSM 460.

After beginning coursework at Jacksonville State Teachers College, he received his BS in Education from the University of Alabama in 1949. He received his MA in Education from the Peabody College for Teachers in 1958 and his Doctorate in Education from Columbia Teachers College (New York City) in 1959. Dr. Deason served as principal of several high schools in Alabama and Georgia before becoming superintendent of schools in Troy, Alabama, then Alamance County, NC and finally was the last superintendent of the N. Wilkesboro City Schools.

He concluded his service to education by serving as Director of Appalachian State University's Wilkes Area Teaching Center, supervising student teachers as they prepared to become public school teachers. Upon retirement, he attended the Local Pastor School at Duke University, became a licensed local pastor and served as minister to a number of small congregations in Ashe and Wilkes counties. He was a faithful teacher and preacher. He was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of N. Wilkesboro and was active with the Men's Bible Class. He helped fellow Bible Class members prepare breakfast for the church each fourth Sunday of the month. He was a loyal member of the Rotary Club and transferred his membership each time he moved for over sixty years. He enjoyed working the merchandise tent at Merlefest with fellow Rotarians and was instrumental in recruiting new members. He lived his last year and a half at Rose Glen Village Retirement Community in Wilkesboro, where he enjoyed the friendship of both new and longtime friends.

Dr. Deason was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Huffaker Deason. He is survived by his son Jack Deason and wife Tina of Durham; daughter Carol McDowell and husband Mike of Elkin; son Mike Deason and wife Peggy of Jeffersonville, Indiana; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Marie Deason Smith and husband, Harold.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1145, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro will be in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.reinssturdivant.com.
