Dr. William S. Grauer, 95, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Friday, June 24, 2011 at Iowa Masonic Health Facilities, Bettendorf. His family will greet friends from 11:30-12:45 p.m. Sunday, June 26th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Rd., Davenport. Burial will follow at Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Davenport, where Rabbi Henry Karp will officiate. Military honors will be presented by American Legion Post #26, Davenport.

Born in Chicago, IL, Dr. Grauer was the son of Albert L. and Hattie Grauer. He did his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins, graduating in 1936, and graduated in 1940 from the Columbia University School of Dentistry. For over 53 years he practiced dentistry in Great Neck, NY before retiring to Bettendorf, IA. During that time he was a consulting dentist for the Great Neck Public Schools.

On January 3, 1941, he married Miriam Jacoby in Great Neck, NY. She died on May 10, 1974. He married Jane Weill Holzer on January 1, 1975 in Great Neck, NY. She died January 30, 2005.

During WWII, he served as a military dentist in Panama with the U.S. Army, with the rank of Major. He joined the reserves for another 8 years from which he retired. Among his vast activities, he was a Mason with Steppingstone Lodge 1956-1993 and held various offices including Master in 1977.

After moving to Bettendorf he joined the Hamilton Lodge in 1993. He was also a member of Lions Club, Great Neck, NY (1952-1993) holding various offices, including President in 1975. Other memberships include the Bettendorf Lions Club, Davenport Hi-Twelve #47 since 1993, the Rifle and Pistol Club of Glenhead, NY #336, for which he served as secretary for 16 years, and Scottish Rite- Legion of Honor. During his years in New York, he was historian of Russell Gardens for 40 years, as well as serving as Village President.

Survivors include sons, Anthony Grauer and Neil Grauer; daughters, Diane (Charles) Siskin, Susan van Berg, Judy (Michael) Hersher, and Louise (Robert Ferris) Sullivan; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Iowa Masonic Health Facility or Temple Emanuel of Davenport.
