George L. Allvord, 61, of Brookhaven, a retired employee of Delmarva Power and Light Company, died Oct. 5 at Smyth County Hospital, Marion, Va.

Born in Ashland, Pa., Mr. Allvord was the son of the late George F. and Vannie S. Allvord. A graduate of Chester High School in 1948, he had lived in Brookhaven for the last 23 years. Mr. Allvord served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was employed by Delmarva as a unit operator for 34 years before his retirement in 1991.

An honorary member of Felton Fire Company, Chester, Mr. Allvord belonged to the West End Boat Club and American Legion Post 926.

Husband of the late Jean Starr Allvord, who died in 1981, he is survived by a brother, Leigh D. Allvord of West Chester; a dear friend, Kathleen McGinnis of Aston; three nephews and a great-nephew.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Minshall-Shropshire Funeral Home, Middletown and Knowlton roads, Middletown. Burial will be in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Marple. Calling hours are after 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
