In Loving Memory
Brother Bernard Eugene, FSC
(Joseph C. Schultz)***
Born May 5, 1879
Entered Brothers' Noviate
November 1, 1894
Died December 27, 1954

The holidays at De La Salle were saddened for the Brothers by the unexpected and sudden death of Brother Bernard Eugene. Those of us who knew him remember him as the old Brother who was retired and so didn't go to school anymore. He was a genial soul, and any of our meetings with him were always pleasant.

Brother was born in New York City 76 years ago. In his early teens he went to the Brothers' Training School at Amawalk, New York, where in due time was given the religious habit and began his course of studies leading up to his Teacher's Certificate. That was about sixty years ago. Some of us remember the great celebration held in his honor for the Diamond Jubilee. At the time, Monsignor J.M.J. Quinn of the New York Arch-diocese came to Detroit to celebrate the solemn Mass for the occasion. Monsignor Quinn was a pupil of Brother Eugene away back when. Several other pupils and a host of friends were present.

During his long term of service in the Church, Brother Bernard Eugene held many important positions and taught in many different schools. Years were spent in Buffalo, Utica, Brooklyn, and Detroit; but most of his teaching career found him in or near his native city of New York, where among other offices he was Principal of Saint Bernard's and Saint Patrick's schools and (a teacher of drawing at) the Cathedral High School. In more recent years, due to the advances of old age, he was bursar at La Salle Academy, new York and Loughlin High School in Brooklyn. Several years ago he was completely retired and sent to De La Salle, Detroit, where it was believed that the salubrious climate of Michigan and the facilities of the Brothers' beautiful new residences would enable him to pass his declining years in peace and comfort.

Though not engaged in school work, he was always found at the various school activities and always willing to be helpful. About the house he answered the phone and doorbell and did many things which made life easier and more agreeable for the other members of the faculty.

Though never seriously ill, age showed him, and on December 27 he suddenly passed out. The bell had rung summoning the Brothers to chapel at 5:30 p.m. Brother Bernard was always prompt in responding, so this evening when he failed to appear one of the Brothers went upstairs to his room to find out if anything was wrong. He discovered the good Brother slumped on the floor. He then called for help and the stricken confrere was placed on his bed where he succumbed in a few minutes. Father Kuienzle came over from Saint David's and administered the last rites of the Church. Doctor Faunae also came over promptly, but was not in time to do anything except sign the death certificate. The cause was found to be coronary thrombosis.

The wake was held in the Brothers' home, with Al Peters, an alumnus of De La Salle in charge. Alumni, students, parents and friends came in great numbers to pay their last tribute. Funeral services were held in Saint David Church. Father Walter, Prior of the Passionist Fathers was the celebrant of the solemn Mass. Father Kienzle of Saint (Continued on Page 3 that I do not have)...

Note: ***His given name is in error here. His father's name was Joseph Schultz and his name was Frederick Damian Schultz according to his WWI and WWII draft registration cards which state he was a Brother at La Salle Academy in NYC.
