From the Spalding Enterprise, February 8, 1902, transcribed by Linda Berney:

Mrs. Dr. A. J. Hadds [sic] of Elgin, died at her home last Thursday morning of cancer of the stomach, from which she had been a constant sufferer for several months past.

The funeral was held at Elgin at ten o'clock a.m. on Friday. Her children were all at her bedside before she departed, including, J. H. O'Neill, Mrs. Mamie Steele, and Miss Eva Coughlin, of Spalding; Miss Grace Coughlin of Elgin, and Mrs. R. J. Dwyer of Butte, Montana.

The life of the deceased has been an eventful one. She was born in Australia, came to California early in childhood, and has travelled extensively since that time. Soon after the war she married General John O'Neill, who became distinguished as a leader of the Fenian raids into Canada, and who now has a monument erected in his honor at Omaha, and also a town named after him in the northern part of the state.

Some time after Mr. O'Neill's death the deceased was again married to Mr. James Coughlin of O'Neill.

After the latter's death she moved with her family from O'Neill to Fullerton, and later to Spalding. Here she was married to Dr. A. J. Hads [sic] who now survives her, and the two had made their home at Elgin for the past five years.

The deceased leaves many sorrowing friends and the sympathy of our people is especially directed toward the bereaved children who live in our midst.
