Great Grandaughter of Benjamin Franklin and advocate of Women's Rights. She was an active figure in Philadelphia. During the Civil War she played a major role in organizing the 1864 Great Central Sanitary Fair that raised a considerable amount of money to care for sick and wounded soldiers. She also volunteered at military hospitals. Elizabeth organized and raised funds for the Centennial Exhibition in 1876. She organized the Women's Pavilion that featured women's arts, inventions, publications, etc. The National Cookery Book was compiled and published through the efforts of Elizabeth. It contained over 1,000 recipes submitted by women from every state. She was also active in the founding of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. Gillespie was also a writer and her autobiography, Book of Remembrances, tells about her lifetime of public service in the Philadelphia community. Wife of Archibald Hamilton Gillespie.
