Eloise Chappell Morris

DURHAM — Eloise Chappell Morris, aged 97, passed away March [sic,April] 8, 2014.

Mrs. Morris was the daughter of John M. and Lucy Chappell and the widow of the late Dr. James B. Morris of Durham.

Upon graduating from Durham High School, she attended Campbell University, where she assisted the late playwright and UNC professor Paul Green in his outdoor theatre productions in eastern and western North Carolina.

Mrs. Morris’ love for the theater was a lifelong interest. She worked with the Duke Players under the late director A.T. West to organize the first Little Theater group in Durham called the “Durham Theater Guild” in 1950. The Guild became a part of the Allied Arts in 1954 and was renamed Durham Allied Arts in 1975. A highlight of her life was assisting her late daughter, actress Anita Morris, backstage in New York Broadway shows.

She had a large collection of cultural and antique costumes and music, and used them in original shows she produced for charities and churches.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Durham Exchangette club for over 60 years.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Jon Byron Morris and wife Maurine, and Dr. James Douglas Morris and wife Carolyn, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Morris’ memorial service will be limited to a gathering of family and close friends, date to be announced.
