1926 OLIVER BERHOW, CIVIL WAR VETERAN ANSWERS TAPS
Taps sounded for another Civil War Veteran of this community last Tuesday, June 1st, when Oliver Berhow, aged 80 years passed away at the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Berhow. Death was due to heart failure.
The deceased was born, May 6, 1846 in Skaanvik, Norway , where he spent his boyhood days. In 1857, at the age of 11 years, he immigrated to America later locating in Story County, Iowa. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Civil War and served until the end of the war in the 44th Regiment, Iowa Infantry Company H, when he received his honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Carrie Stanerson in 1870, who proceeded him in death ten years ago. To this union 15 children were born, three of whom died in infancy. These surviving are, George, Ole, August, and Ernest Berhow of Fertile, Minnesota; Thomas Berhow and Mrs. Elmer Swenson of Brantwood, Wisconsin; Mrs. Hemmie Kaski, of Stetsonville, WI; Henry Berhow of Albert Lea; Martin Berhow of Swea City, IA; Francis Berhow of Buffalo Center, IA; Albert Berhow of Goodell, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his departure.
Funeral services were held at the Joseph Berhow home last Thursday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock, Rev. Lunde of Armstrong, preaching the funeral sermon. Six ex-service men, members of the local legion post acted as pall-bearers, namely Wm. Zschariason, Chas Anderson, Carlton Lyons, Art Stanton, George Hoover and W.L. Emerson. Following the service at the home, the remains were taken to Brantwood, WI, where the deceased was laid to rest beside his wife.
