Minnie Viola Stubblefield was the second child born to Charles Dawson Stubblefield and Mattie Green. Viola was born on her parents' family farm in the Childersburg area of Talladega County called Fayetteville for US Census purposes.

She married Crawford Pope Carroll in about 1935, and they established residence on a family farm in the Columbiana area of Shelby County. Viola and Crawford would have four children, and would spend their entire lives together in the Columbiana area.
