George J. Murphy, 73, of Scranton, died Sunday evening surrounded by family and friends at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart after an illness.
Born Jan. 21, 1943, he was the son of the late Chief Federal Judge John W. Murphy and the late Ella Heffron Murphy. After attending high school, he enlisted in the Navy Reserve and was a plank owner of the U.S.S. Constellation.
He went on to attend the University of Scranton, earning his associate degree in law enforcement; the F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, Va.; the U.S. Service Dignitary Protection Seminar; and the Pennsylvania State Police Northeast Academy.
He began his outstanding career with the Scranton Police Department in 1966 as a patrolman and worked his way to detective of criminal investigation, commander of the Special Duty Investigation Unit, supervisor of the Undercover Unit and acting detective lieutenant. He served as police chief of Scranton from 1990 to 1998.
George honorably dedicated his life to the service and protection of Scranton, and loved his city until the day he died. After his retirement, he was employed by the state Liquor Control Board.
His passion was his community. Even after retirement, he could be found at all hours patrolling the neighborhood, looking for crime and anyone he might be able to help.
He was a member of the F.B.I. National Academy Associates, Northeastern PA Police Chiefs Association, International Chiefs of Police Association, the Jermyn Lodge Fraternal Order of Police and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Marie Murphy Bonin Maguire.
Surviving are his children, Julie Ann Murphy Leonard and husband, John; George Murphy and wife, Kim Patel; George Wright and Michelle Stone; his grandchildren, 1st Lt. Jordan T. Leonard USMCR and wife, Brooke; Patrolman Jacob "Jake" Leonard; Kieran Patel, Anya Patel and Carter Stone; his brother, John W. Murphy Jr.; his sister, Ellen Murphy Mellody; and his companion, Darlene Pallien.
Family and friends may pay their respects at Eugene A. Cusick Funeral Home, 217 Jefferson Ave., Scranton, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. The funeral will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. from Mary Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St., Scranton.
Friends and family wishing to attend the funeral should report directly to the church Friday morning.
