EDINBURG - Herschel Bennett White, age 84, died March 25, 2010, in McAllen, Texas after being hospitalized from heart complications.
Mr. White was born September 17, 1925, in Jim Wells County, Texas, to Lee Davis and Ozelle Wilson White. Upon graduation from Alice High School he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was accepted into the Pilot Training Program. After graduating from Cadet Training at Randolph Air Base, San Antonio, TX, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and trained scores of instructor and combat pilots. When WWII ended he returned home, attended a local college and managed his family's farm and ranch outside Ben Bolt, Texas. In the late 40's he began "crop dusting" and in 1956 moved to Edinburg, Texas, forming Norman & White Aero Service, the crop spraying business he operated for almost 40 years. In 1996, at age 71, he retired from flying and soon thereafter sold his company and aircraft. If he loved anything more than flying it was football: There was no more devoted Dallas Cowboy fan - ever. In high school he once played in a State Playoff game against Tom Landry, legendary founding coach of the Dallas Cowboys. In the 60's he once delivered orange juice drinks via helicopter, landing on the Edinburg Bobcat football field during a hot summer day practice.
Mr. White is survived by his sister, Vernice Luthy; one daughter and her spouse, Karen and Pat McMurry; three sons and their spouses, Steven and Wendy White, Stanley and Eva White and Mark White; grandchildren Amanda, Orion and Jacob; and great grandchild, Josiah.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mildred.
No local services are planned but a Memorial Service is pending for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations may be made to the Texas Agricultural Aviation Association (TAAA), a state organization which he presided over in 1996 and was a member of at the time of his death.
