Civil War Confederate Army Officer. A native of South Carolina, Pressley graduated from the Citadel in 1851. In 1860 he was a signer of South Carolina's Articles of Secession. In 1861 Pressley entered Confederate service at the rank of Captain in command of Company E of the 1st (Hagwood's) South Carolina Infantry. In 1862 he took command of the 25th South Carolina Infantry as a Lieutenant Colonel, a post he held until he was seriously wounded in 1864. After the war, Lt. Colonel Pressley moved to California where he practiced law until his death. His South Carolina home is today listed and protected as a National Historic Place.

Gravesite Details

Lt. Col. John Gotea Pressley of the 25th Infantry has supposedly been spotted walking between his grave and the graves of two Confederate captains, Robert Press Smith Sr. and Robert Press-Smith Jr.
