In 1898, Charles A. Spofford, a successful electrical engineer (later hired to manage London's underground railway and convert it from steam to elecricity), commissioned well-known architect, E.K. Rossiter to build a English Tudor-style mansion on Maple Avenue known upon its completion as "The Alders." Now known as the Manor House, this elegant mansion is the perfect location for a luxurious getaway in a town that can still boast of its natural beauty, an array of outdoor activities for every season, and live music of all types year round.

He married Ellen Boardman, 25 Dec 1885. They had one daughter, Barbara.
