At the time of his passing, which was caused by an accidental drowning that had also claimed the life of his friend & classmate Christopher Augur (#3060390), he was a sophomore student at Princeton University in Princeton, NJ.
The two were canoeing with friends in Millstone River when their boat suddenly became trapped by the reversing current & sent the two over a dam.

Nutley,, May 23rd - The funeral of Philip Kingsland Hay, 22, son of Colonel James R. Hay, the Princeton student who drowned while canoeing on the Millstone Creek on Sunday, took place at noon today at Grace Episcopal Church.
Seventy-five Princeton students, including many of the classmates of young Hay, and many friends of the family were present.
The services were conducted by the Rev. H. Fields Saumring, assisted by the Rev. John P. Appleton, of East Orange, and the Rev. C.S. Abbott of Bellville.
At Rosedale Cemetery, in Orange, the services were conducted by the rector of Grace Church.
The pallbearers were Henry Adsit, Phillip Moore, Stuart Young, Frederick Hussey, W.A. Smith and Hugh Herndon, [both] of Princeton University, and Henry B. Prout and L.S. Thurston of Columbia University.
