John moved his family from York Pennsylvania to Greene County Tennessee in the late 1800's where 9 more children were born.
Because of John's strong views against slavery, John moved his family from Tennessee to Union Township, Clinton County, Ohio in 1810. In the Spring of 1811, his wife, Ruth, died after falling into a fire while rendering lard. This left John to raise the remaining 10 children that were still at home.
In 1813, John married his second wife, Lydia Ladd, daughter of Gerald Ladd and Sarah Elizabeth Johnson of Highland, Ohio. Together, they had another 4 children with one, David Oren, dying in infancy.
John was a member of the Friend's Church and was prominent in the establishment of the Dover Church which was erected near his home. When he died in 1847, his remains were buried in the Dover Cemetery along with both of his wives and 4 of his children.
John stood 6'01" and was a sturdy farmer and family man.
