Joann Butts, 82 of Newcastle, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 in Gillette.

Joann Clara Brown was born on November 11, 1933 to Kenneth and Nelle (Salisbury) Brown in Bison, SD. She was the second oldest of five siblings and attended school in Bison, Meadow and the Lemmon area.

While living on the farm in Lemmon she attended country school there until the summer of 1950. At the age of 16 she went to Newcastle to live with an aunt and uncle and watch their two children for the summer. That’s when she met and later married the love of her life Leslie A. Butts.

They were married on July 15, 1951 and to this union three children were born, Leslie L. Butts, Patricia A. Butts and Larry D. Butts.

Joann was a stay-at-home mom for many years until the children were older. At that time she went to work cleaning houses for many years in the Newcastle area. In 1975, Leslie and Joann moved to Hulett when he was transferred with the Wyoming Highway Dept. She continued to clean for a couple of places including the Devil’s Tower KOA. She was a bartender for a time and also worked for Sharon’s Home Health.

She loved to read, watch old western movies, (John Wayne being her biggest hero), crocheting and making quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Leslie (Martha) Butts, Patty (Rusty) McCoy and Larry (LeAnn) Butts all of Newcastle; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; four step great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Laura Bock of Osage and Mary Ann Robinson of Moorcroft; sister-in-law Bubbles Brown of Newcastle; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brothers, Lester Brown and Kenneth Brown, Jr.
