Henry Kendall became world-famous in 1910 for his role in the capture of Hawley Harvey Crippen (September 11, 1862 – November 23, 1910), known as Dr. Crippen or the Cellar murderer. Crippen murdered his wife, Cora Henrietta Crippen.

Henry George Kendall was a British sea captain. Kendall was captain of the RMS Empress of Ireland ship that sank in the Saint Lawrence River in Canada after a collision with the SS Storstad, a Norwegian coal freighter due to fog and poor visibility that early morning of May 29 1914 . 1,012 lives were lost. He was also the captain of the Pacific Line's SS Montrose (Canadian).

Celebrities on board were actor Laurence Irving. Laurence and Mabel Irving drowned in the RMS Empress of Ireland disaster . Reports in news accounts of the tragedy say that they got separated and Laurence was in a position of temporary safety, but he knew Mabel could not swim and he jumped back into the St. Lawrence River to rescue her. Their bodies were never found. Laurence Irving (son of the famous actor Sir Henry Irving (6 February 1838 – 13 October 1905), )accompanied by his wife, actress Mabel Hackney, were returning from a Canadian tour. They and most of the other passengers, which included roughly 170 members of the Salvation Army heading to a big convention in London, were by this time of night sound asleep. So were most of the crew.

Only 4 out of the 138 children on board survived. The Empress of Ireland still holds the record for the largest number of passengers lost on a liner in peacetime(840), and more than either Titanic or Lusitania.

Kendall's wife was Jane "Minnie" Jones.
Kendall's Grandson is Father Canon Michael Saward
