Ivan was my 2nd great uncle by marriage to my great grandfather's sister Ethel Lorinda Collins. He left Illinois along with his family for Tulare County, CA some time between 1910 and 1920 according to censuses and married my 2nd great aunt in 1920. He eventually died July 10, 1969 in California.

Ivan Stewart Butler Dies
Ivan Stewart Butler, 69, a resident of Grass Valley since 1945, died early this morning at Nevada General Hospital where he had been a patient since June 30.
Mr. Butler was born in Fillmore, Ill., served in the U.S. Navy during World War I and moved to this area from Concord 24 years ago. He worked here for the U.S. Forest Service as a patrolman for 12 years and later was a welder for the U.S. Signal Corps, keeping his home here and commuting.
The Butler family home is at 125 Glen Meadow Dr., Grass Valley.
Survivors include wife, Ethel; a son, Clay of Sacramento; a daughter, Gwen B. Smith of Fair Oaks; a sister, Mrs. Foster Elam of Dinuba and six grandchildren.
Mr. Butler was a member of World War I Barracks No. 776.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hooper and Weaver Chapel with the Rev. Noel E. Carden officiating. Officers and members of the Nevada County Veterans Affiliated Council will conduct graveside services at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Ivan moved with his family from Montgomery Co. IL to CA in 1912; they lived first in Santa Monica, then bought 40 A. of land at Perris Ranch in Riverside Co. After losing the land to debt in 1914, they moved to Tulare Co. CA. Ivan partnered with his brother-in-law Foster Elam in an automotive electrical shop in Dinuba, Tulare Co. until about 1925; in 1926 he lived in Roseville, Placer Co. CA; he moved to Rocklin, Sacramento Co. CA where he was a foreman at a marble quarry; after the construction business fell off, he worked delivering milk and went to night school to study welding; he was hired by J. Paul Getty in Martinez as a welder and welding instructor (at an oil refinery (possibly the Tidewater Oil Co. refinery, or part of Pacific Western Oil Corp. which Getty acquired after 1929), specializing in welding dissimilar metals; about 1930 he moved to the Concord/Walnut Creek area where he owned 5 A. of walnuts and continued to work for Getty until WWII started, then around 1942 worked at the Mare Island naval shipyard repairing ships and submarines and teaching welding to women; later he moved to Grass Valley, Nevada Co. CA
