Mr. John Holland Barnes, known to most as Johnnie, 89, of Ehrhardt, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, August 6, 2016, after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Barnes was born April 18, 1927 in Colleton County and was the son of Oliver Plato Barnes and Pearl Varn Barnes. He attended and graduated from Lodge High School. He was active in Colleton County 4-H and a member of the 1944 Colleton County Livestock Judging Team. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Maritime Service with the Merchant Marines. When his tour of duty was complete, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with the 753rd Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion with the occupational forces in Japan and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He attended the University of South Carolina on the GI Bill before returning to the family farm. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Emily “Billie” Berry and was a faithful and devoted husband to her until her death in 2010.

He was employed in 1951 by I.E. du Pont at the Savannah River Site (Security) and Westinghouse Savannah River Company (Transport and Transportation) for more than 39 years. He was a member of the SRS Pistol Team competing at the state and national level and qualified as an Expert Marksman. While employed and after retiring, he continued his farming operation in which he raised livestock and numerous row crops. He enjoyed planting a large vegetable garden in order to share its bounty with his friends and family.

He was an active member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Ehrhardt; he served as church treasurer for many years as well as held various church offices. Even as his heath declined he looked forward to attending weekly Sunday worship services.

Mr. Barnes was a founding board member of the Willow Swamp Watershed Project, actively serving on the board for 50 years and as its chairman for many years. For his dedicated service and conservation efforts he received the Watershed Man of the Year Award from the S.C. Land Resources Commission and the Association of Conservation Districts in 1986 and the Conservationist of the Year Award from the Colleton Soil and Water District in 2013. He was an active member of the Ashton Grange # 5211 for over 40 years. He was also a member of the Hampton American Legion Post 108. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially quail hunting when wild birds were plentiful on the farm.

Surviving are two sons: Marion Barnes and his wife Carmen Glenn Barnes of Ehrhardt and Robert Barnes of Columbia; one grandson: Jacob Barnes of Madison, Georgia; siblings, Oliver Lee (Margie) Barnes, Ben (Sue) Barnes, Marion Edward (Anne) Barnes, and Grace (Buddy) Caldwell.
