Rev. Dr. George Baker died at his home in Allegheny on December 17, 1903. Mr. Baker was born on a farm in Pike Run township, Washington county, Pa., on August 20, 1822, being the eldest son of Louis Baker, a pioneer farmer. He had three brothers and one sister - two brothers only surviving him - Louis F Baker, esq., of California, Pa., and Hon. William Baker of Lincoln, Kas. In 1846 and 1847, he attended school at Allegheny college, Meadville. He began to teach in Greene County and finally entered Waynesburg College graduating in 1852 with a degree of A.M. In 1859 he was elected County Superintendent of Schools. At the time of his election he was Principal of Greene Academy at Carmichaels and so successful had he been in building up the school that the Trustees would not hear of his retiring when he was elected Superintendent. That same year he accepted the position of pastor of the Church at Mount Morris, thus filling three positions at once. George and Miss Adaline Dorsey of Morgantown, W.Va. were united in marriage June 20, 1849. In 1874 he moved to Saltsburg, Indiana, where his faithful wife died September 1, 1876. To them were born ten children - six sons and four daughters. Four sons and three daughters survive. The surviving sons and daughters of the family are as follows: Dorsey Baker of Baltimore, Md.; W. H. Baker of Ridgway; Mrs. Mary E Crosby of Allegheny; Mrs. William A. Grant of Blairsville; James P. Baker, Altoona; Miss Emma R. Baker of Allegheny and Frank Baker of Pittsburg.
