Appointment from the civilian ranks to the Seventh Regiment of Cavalry under George A. Custer as Second Lieutenant, Company L, on July 28, 1866, at the date of initial organization. Joining the regiment in February 1867, he was posted to Ft. Morgan and promoted to 1st Lt., effective February 21, 1867. In June his company was posted to Ft. Reynolds, Colorado, where he remained most of the year on scouting duty and as adjutant to the company commander at that time, Capt. Gillette. Following Gillette'e reposting, he commanded company L in the absence of Capt. M.V. Sheridan. Abell went on leave of absence to attend personal affairs, during which time he tendered his resignation on December 15, 1870. He died on September 14, 1883.
