There are two birth certificates for William. According to the information contained on them, William was born at the Spokane Mine in the Black Hills of Custer County, South Dakota, with his father Vincent Judd recorded as a Rancher (own ranch) and as born at Spokane, Custer co, and his mother as Stella McHenry, born Boyd County, Nebraska. The usual residence of the family was Spokane.

According to oral family history William was premature (7 months) and he lived only 4 hours. The attending physician at William's birth was Dr. Heilesen, of whom Judd descendants can recount many stories of his care, or lack therof, of the citizens of Hermosa and surrounding area. It would appear that in this case the doctor left the scene before the baby died and filed only a birth, not a birth and death, certificate. There is no record of his death that I can find, and he is not listed in the South Dakota Death Index.

According to oral family history Grandpa (Vincent Judd) fashioned a small coffin, Grandma provided a lining and the family buried him on the Judd Ranch under a large tree. The Judd family sold out and moved to Hood River, Oregon in 1944. There is no mention of any kind of surviving grave marker when descendants made a visit to this site in 1973, although there were comments about how much the tree had grown - called "Vincent's Tree" in the family.

Unfortunately, without a grave marker descendants would certainly not be able to find this burial location based upon the story of a tree, indeed it's getting difficult to even identify the borders of the Judd Ranch.

So, his grave may be lost, but he was remembered by those nearest to him when he entered and then so quickly left this world, and memory of him will be included in family genealogies.
