US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected to the US House of Representatives from North Carolina's 1st congressional district for 13 consecutive terms, from February 1966 until his death in September 1992. Born Walter Beaman Jones, he attended North Carolina State University at Raleigh, North Carolina and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1934 and became a businessman. In 1949 he entered politics when he was elected mayor of Farmville, North Carolina. From 1955 until 1959 he served in the North Carolina Legislative Assembly and in the State Senate in 1965. In February 1966 he was chosen by special election to fill the congressional seat vacated by the death of fellow Democrat Herbert C. Bonner and from January 1981 until his death, he chaired the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries. He died from natural causes at the age of 79 and was succeeded by Democrat Eva M. Clayton. His son, Walter B. Jones, Jr, is a Republican congressman from North Carolina's 3rd congressional district.
