Prayers for Donald F. Baier, 84, a longtime resident of Elgin, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin, followed by Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Born Jan. 18, 1914, in DeKalb, the son of Frederick and Anna Baier, he died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Baier had owned and operated Sun-Ray Poultry Company of Dundee before retiring. He and his brother, Jerry Baier, owned and raced trotters and pacers for many years. He served as a captain in the Army during World War II, and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and a 50-year member of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge No. 737 of Elgin. Among his many other memberships, Mr. Baier was a member of the Woodstock Country Club, the Illinois Harness Horseman's Association, and the U.S. Trotting Association.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; brother, William (Betty) Baier of Elgin; and eight nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Murphy; and brother, Jerry.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Provena St. Joseph Hospital Oncology Department.
