Funeral Services for Alma “A. J. “ Smith Sr. 89, of Conroe, TX were held Monday, August 15, 2016 in the Corrigan Funeral Home Chapel in Corrigan, Texas. Interment to be in the Stryker Cemetery in Corrigan, TX.
Alma was born on September 17, 1926 in Pluck, Texas to Jettie Lee Smith and Alma Sirman and went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 after a short illness, with his family by his side. He spent his younger years in Corrigan.
Alma was of the Lutheran faith. He joined the United States Navy in June of 1944 at the age of seventeen and served on a minesweeper. He retired from Union Pacific Railroad after 43 ½ years of service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Francis Kennedy; wife, Nila Faye (Herring) Smith; father, Jettie L. Smith; sister, Myrteil J. Shirley.
Alma is survived by his son, Alma Joe Smith, Jr. and wife Lauren K; grandchildren, Ryan Smith and wife Susan; Amy Jo Nuzum and husband Chad; great grandsons, C.J. Nuzum, Carson Nuzum and Liam Francis Smith and his beloved dog Ziggy and numerous nieces and nephews.
