Leona Margaret (Keefe) Woolworth, 101, died Thursday at Fountain West Care Center. She was born in Oxford, IA and moved to Des Moines in 1913. After graduating from West High School, Leona attended the University of Iowa for 2 years. She graduated from Mercy Hospital Nursing School in 1931 and became a registered nurse. She specialized in private duty. In October of 1943, she married Leo Woolworth in Fort Dodge, IA and they moved to Little Rock, AR. Leo died in 1949 and she returned to Des Moines. She retired at age 75 and did volunteer work. She moved to Fountain West in 1990 to be near her sister, Helen Keefe.
Leona was a member of the Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, and Mercy Hospital Nursing Alumni Association.
She is survived by 2 nieces, Mary Massery of Little Rock, AR; and Rosalie Hauer of San Jose, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three sisters, Mary Becker, Rosalie Masdon, and Helen Keefe. Memorials are suggested to Fountain West Care Center. The family would like to thank the staff for the many years of excellent care and kindnesses to Leona.
