William Erik Swanson, 42, of 306 St. Patrick St. in Sault Ste. Marie, was pronouced dead on arrival at hospital Sunday after his snowmachine hit a parked half-ton truck on Old Goulais Bay Road. A city police spokesman said Mr. Swanson was driving south on Old Goulais Bay Road at 9 p.m. Sunday when he struck the parked truck at about 107 Old Goulais Bay Road, just north of Third Line. The spokesman said there was no witnesses to the accident, which occurred between two street lights. It was the eighth and last traffic related death in Sault in 1978. In the Algoma district in 1978 there were 23 fatalities related to traffic accidents. The December 31 snowmachine fatality was the only one of its kind in the Sault in 1978. There were no snowmachine fatalities in 1977, but in 1976 there was a double snowmachine fatality. In 1978 there were no snowmachine fatalities in the district, but in 1977 there was one. Mr. Swanson is the son of Mrs. Leona Swanson and the late William Swanson. The 43-year-old man is the brother of Marjory Swanson and Mrs. Ed Catling (Mary), Jim, Bob and John Swanson. Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home from 7 p.m. tonight. Funeral service will be from the chapel Wednesday, January 3 at 3:15 p.m. with Major William Loveless officiating.
