Edward Stanley Abell was the first child of James H. and Lucy Etheridge Abell. He graduated from Trinity College (now Duke University) in 1878. He studied law with J. T. Langston and, receiving his license, practiced law in Johnston County until his death. He was very active in Johnston County politics during his early years. In his later years he was a senior partner in the law firm, Abell & Shepard. He was recognized as one of the outstanding lawyers in the United States, and was known by the citizens of Smithfield as Colonel Ed Abell. Edward Stanley Abell was married to Irene Page.
