Donald enlisted in the Marines 16 September 1966, at a recruiting office in Newark.
Upon arriving in Vietnam, Donald was assigned to H & S Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Swift, when Donald died as a result of gunshot wounds to the chest, left arm and abdomen from hostile rifle fire, during an engagement against hostile forces In Quang Tin Province.
