(From Nancy Nash, North Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VA:)
John Thomas Nash and Elizabeth Shannon Nash lived on 100 acres given to him by his father and made his home there. This farm adjoined the Summers property and next to that was the Bane land, names which would be added to the Nash line in the next generation. This farm was bounded by Shannon land on the west and was about 4 miles east of the William Daniel Nash farm. When the Civil war erupted, John already had a family, but enlisted at once in the Confederate army. He was at Gettysburg and with Jubal Early's raid on Washington, among other actions. His brother Joseph served in the Union army.
John was a Captain during the Civil War, serving in Co. I, 16th Cavalry, CSA. He became a prisoner in the Union lines. Military records record that he had dark complexion, gray eyes and dark hair. After the war, he was a farmer at Bluestone, Tazewell Co., VA - five miles east of Springville, VA.
