Edward was the oldest son of Owen P. Smith "Founder and Inventor" of Greyhound Racing and Hannah M. Smith, first woman, ever, to head an International Sport. He had two sibings, Mary and Owen.

Edward was one of the owners of the American Toteboard Co. with family friend and greyhound racing pioneer Thomas A. Keen. Edward as a child had a champion dog that raced at the Miami Beach Kennel Club named Deacon S. He was interviewed for an article for the Sport Illustrated Magazine in 1973, about the beginnings of Greyhound Racing.

He had two children with his wife Lucille. Sharon and Dennis.
