Frank was the son of Samuel H Bates and Adaline C Irish. He married Maud Ena Everhart (daughter of William Everhart and Lucy Cohan) on 3 January 1893 in Grant City, Sac, Iowa. They were the parents of Clarence Bazel (1900, Robina Corire). He married Bessie Bohringer before 1910. They were the parents of Vernon Herald (1916) and Harry B (1914).

The Odebolt Chronicle - Thu, Jan 18, 1940 - Frank Bates, 65, Grant City bricklayer, was instantly killed last Wednesday evening near his home when his car collided with a truck of grain opening Sac County's dreaded list of highway fatalities for the new year.

Sydney Condreay and Ray Schmitz of Cedar Rapids, NE drivers of the truck loaded with 341 bushels of shelled corn, miraculously escaped with only bruises. Bates body was crushed in the car and it was some time before he could be extricated.

The accident occurred between the Grant city bridge and the road coming from Ulmer at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Bates apparently failed to make the turn and drove his car into the path of the heavily loaded truck, according to the story told Sheriff Stuart by the drivers. Both stated seeing the car come into their path and when the truck went out of control from the impact, threw themselves into the sleeping compartment, and act which undeniably accounted for their escape.

Mr Bates is survived by two sons, Vernon and Harry of Grant City.
