Her father Mahmod Babakir Mahmod and her uncle Ari Mahmod were given life sentences as well as Omar Hussain and Mohamad Saleh Ali. Mohamad Hadmad and two others have been accused of her death.
The man she fell in love with after leaving her abusive marriage never recovered from her murder and took his own life ten years later.

Banaz was a young Muslim woman from an extremely strict family in Iraq. Her husband, chosen by family, abused Banaz and when she fell in love with someone else, her family considered this an outrage and betrayal.
