Mrs. Margaret Glendinning, Widow of One of Salt Lake's First Gentile Mayors, Succumbs.

CAME TO IDAHO IN 1870

Was Sister of Late Senator and Governor George Laird. Shoup - Six Children Survive

Mrs. Margaret Glendinning widow of one of the first Gentile mayors of Salt Lake City, died yesterday afternoon at her home, E 517 Nora avenue. She was born in Kitanning, PA., in 1844 and is 1870 came west to Salmon, Idaho, where she was married two years later is James Glendinning.

The family removed to Salt Lake in the early '80's and Mr. Glendinning was one of the first Gentile members of the Utah legislature and was later elected mayor of Salt Lake.

Sister of Late Senator Shoup

Mrs. Glendinning was a sister of the late George Laird Shoup, the last territorial and he first state governor of Idaho, and for two terms United States senator from that state. Mr. Glendinning and Senator Shoup were business partners for many years.

Mrs. Glendinning was one of 10 children. A brother, James M. Shoup, the only surviving member of the family is a resident of Alaska. Mrs. Glendinning was one of the first school teachers in central Idaho. The family came to Spokane 15 years ago, and Mr. Glendinning died soon after their arrival here.

Survived by Six Children

Of seven children born to Mrs. Glendinning, six survive - Arthur S. Glendinning, chief clerk in the office of the Northern Pacific superintendent; Robert Glendinning, manager of the Lehigh Portland Cement company; Malcolm Glendinning, city editor of The Spokesman-Review; Miss Margaret Glendinning, cataloguer at the Spokane public library, and Mrs. Elizabeth Cummings, all of Spokane, and Mrs. Lee K. Ward of Washington, PA. All were present at the time of her death except Mrs. Ward, who, with her husband, is expected to arrive in Spokane this morning. There are eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Glendinning was taken ill last spring, and had been confined to her bed for the last three months. Pneumonia was the direct cause of her death. Funeral arrangements will not be made until the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Ward.
