Viola Mae Phillips, 92, of McAlester, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at a local nursing home. Born May 4, 1914, in McCurtain, she was the daughter of Frank and Della (Gamble) Greenmyer. She grew up in that area and moved to McAlester in the early 1950's. She married Charles Whittaker, who preceded her in death in 1965. In 1971 she married Ed Phillips who also preceded her in death in 1990. She had worked at J. C. Penney's, downtown, for 20 years. She was of the Baptist faith and had belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star. She also took part in local square dancing groups and was a volunteer precinct worker for the county election board for many years. Survivors include two sisters, Lou Emma Kerr, Grand Junction, Colo., and LaDean Kitts, Phoenix; step-children, Lee Phillips, Chris Phillips and Jim Phillips. Also, nieces and nephews, June and C. W. Rose, of Keota, Robert and Sue Greenmyer, of Wagner, Judy and Ronnie Brigance, of McAlester, Roger and Kitty Greenmyer, of Keota, Ricky and Sharon Greenmyer, of Stigler, Larry Whittaker, and Gary Whittaker, and special friend and caregiver, Regina Stout, of McAlester. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brumley-Mills Chapel with the Rev. J. P. Hackler officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
