David Blackburn, 74, of Malta Bend, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, in the home where he was born.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at Malta Bend United Methodist Church. Rev. Amanda Shrein and William W. Harlow will officiate. Friends may call Thursday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall or at the family home. Burial with military rites will be held at Malta Bend Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Malta Bend American Legion Post 558. Memorials may be made to Fitzgibbon-Mary Montgomery Hospice or The David Blackburn Memorial Scholarship Fund.
He was born Dec. 24, 1931, the son of C. O. Blackburn and Vivian Mitchener Blackburn. He served in the U.S. Army, 36th Field Artillery, in Germany, during the Korean conflict. On July 20, 1957, he married Dona Carlene Wylie; she survives of the home. He lived in Saline County his entire life and was a retired farmer. He had been a member of the United Methodist Church of Malta Bend since 1962. He was also a member of the American Legion, Malta Bend Memorial Post 558, where he served in many capacities, including Commander, Membership Chairman, Adjutant, Finance Officer, Chaplain, Historian, and Chairman of County Government Day. He also served as District Commander, Vice Commander and Adjutant. He received the Distinguished Legionnaire Award in 1989. He was a faithful member to his post and will be greatly missed by the members. David was also active in his community. He enjoyed umpiring baseball games, attending sports events, and supporting the education of the community's youth. The most important thing to David was his family. He loved to be surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters and three sons: Lana Sandweiss of Liberty, Jan VanGordon of Spring Hill, Kan., Michael Blackburn of LaMonte, Shelly Mills of Warrensburg, Rick Blackburn of Marshall, Sara Ortiz of Dickinson, Texas, Brian Blackburn of Concordia and Stacey Hurtado of Missouri City, Texas. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a brother, John L. Blackburn of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Blackburn and Gordon Blackburn.
