Valeda was born in Crawford County, Arkansas on July 26, 1933. She was the third of eight children born to Ollie Benton and Effie Lois (Beckham) Blasingame.

Valeda married Bill Weaver, and there were four children born to this union: James Powell, Twanna Beth, Paul Jeffrey, and Melissa Gaye. The couple later divorced, leaving Valeda to raise the children alone. Not being one to be sidelined by life's difficulties, Valeda continued working to better herself to advance her position in her job. While she worked at many jobs, she also became adept at home and auto repair in order to keep the family going. Valeda's last position was at the LeFlore County Health Department in Poteau.

Valeda saw her children through school, marry, and begin lives on their own. In 1983 she married Bill Johnston. They had 32 years together enjoying their combined family and welcoming grandchildren. Valeda passed away November 25, 2015 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Valeda is survived by her husband, Bill Johnston, her children, and her siblings: Zelta Smith, Leta Faye Morton, Mary Morgan, Pat Hopkins, and Dale Blasingame. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Jeanie Foster-Israel and Barbara Ritter.
