4th State President of the South African Republic. He served from July 1, 1872 – April 12, 1877. Prior to becoming president he studied theology in the Netherlands and became a minister in Hanover, Northern Cape, South Africa. Some of his controversial positions about religion caused him to be suspended but the ruling was reversed by courts. His elegant, persuasive speech and culture appealed to many South Africans seeking a successor to President Marthinus W. Pretorius, who had resigned in 1871. He was nominated and won by a huge majority. Some of his ideas about education, government, and religion soon left the populace dismayed. The country was broke due to a conflict with the Pedi. After failing to secure loans abroad, the country was annexed by the British government eager to promote federation in Southern Africa. He is best remembered for surrendering the republic to Sir Theophilus Shepstone and his annexing force of 25 policemen representing the British crown after the legislative body of the country refused to pass emergency taxation. Burgers then retired into obscurity.
